Hi, I’m stuart
In 2013 I set up Chisel & Grain in Frome with my brother-in-law.
Its always been important to me that we are known for being reliable, trustworthy and hard-working, which I consider the foundations of our approach. Our prices are fair and we are known for keeping in good communication with our clients.
When I’m not working you will find me spending time with my family, practising Jiu Jitsu and perhaps baking bread. I also like to sing, but don’t tell anybody…
About chisel & grain
We are nothing without collaboration and partnerships. We cannot produce nor succeed without relationships with clients, designers and fellow makers. Since day one, Chisel & Grain has built strong relationships with other skilled individuals and businesses and we will always need the support of our many associates to continue to create.
When Chisel & Grain began, our team’s many years of experience in different areas of carpentry and building meant we hit the ground running with building garden cabins, coffee shop furniture and playhouses. Our reputation grew and we soon found ourselves working on larger builds, renovating unique features in quirky Frome cottages and building large-scale garden rooms.
Our community is important to us and we’ve never wanted to be ‘just’ carpenters and builders. For this reason we have worked on a number of community projects based in the Frome area, including supporting volunteers to create a public roundhouse by the river and other furniture for public spaces. We have worked closely with Edventure: Frome on a range of their practical projects. Most recently we have been building their EdSpaces, cleverly designed cabin/ studio spaces that clip-together, and can be put up in a day. They can be carried through terraced houses with no rear access, which is certainly a handy feature in Frome!
What We do best
If we had to choose, cabins and outdoor structures are our favourite things to build. However, we are always happy to hear about new projects and love the variety of work our clients offer us. We are fortunate enough to know many other skilled tradespeople in the area and are pleased to signpost you to other trusted businesses and individuals during particularly busy periods, or if we feel someone else might better meet the needs of your project.

We don’t include costs on our website as we price all work according to each individual project. However, we can guarantee that you will be given a fair price for any work we do. After many years of experience we are skilled in making estimates and sticking to budgets. We are always happy to give you a breakdown of costs to make sure you feel informed at every stage of your project. When it comes to money, we find communication is key to keeping relationships positive!
